Where to Find Turtles in Minecraft

Turtles mostly spawn in the overworld, specifically on beaches in daylight but in snowy variants or stone shore, it does not prowl there. So, you can only find them near the coastlines. They occasionally spawned in a group of 5 individuals. The best place to find turtles in Minecraft is coastlines.

When turtles spawn in a group there is approximately a 10% chance that one will be a baby turtle in that group. But if you are playing in a Minecraft Bedrock Edition, then turtles need certain criteria to spawn and that will be different from normal.

In Bedrock Edition turtles spawn in a group ranging from 2 to 6 at a light level of 7 or more, at Y=60-67. Whereas in Java Edition, they spawn at light levels greater than 8.

How to Tame Turtles in Minecraft

You can’t properly tame turtles but that doesn’t mean that you can’t keep them in your house. Turtles have “Home Beach” which they always remember because they either spawn there or hatch their eggs on that beach. When the turtle has to lay eggs, they return to their home beach and then they lay their eggs.

To tame the turtle, you can have a silk touch pickaxe, with that you can easily collect the eggs and move them near to your house where there must be a source of water and sand. Placing the eggs in that area will make them feel like it’s their home beach and eventually it will become yours.

How to Breed Turtles in Minecraft

In Minecraft, you can breed turtles as many times as you want. By doing this, they lay eggs and those eggs eventually turn into a baby turtle. To breed turtles, you have to feed them two Seagrass which you will find in ocean biomes and that will make them enter in the love mode causing one of the turtles to have eggs in its inventory.

After that, the turtle carrying eggs will try to return to their home beach where they spawn or lay their eggs. After reaching there, they will dig into the sand for a few seconds and lay between 1 to 4 eggs.

As soon as the turtle lays eggs, it can breed again. In bedrock edition, there will be a 90 seconds cooldown time between breeding.

Turtles Eggs

After breeding, the turtles lay their eggs in the sand. You can also place eggs if you have collected the silk touch pickaxe. Once placed, the egg will hatch after taking some time. The time period it takes to hatch an egg is completely random. However, it often takes some time.

As it takes a bit of time, you have to protect the eggs from other hostile. You can place torches and fences to ensure that hostile don’t spawn there.

There are certain mobs that can attack the eggs. They are Skeleton, Zombies, Strays, Ocelots, Foxes, Wither, Zombie Villager, Husks, Drowned, etc. So, it is a better idea to protect the eggs from these mobs. Once the baby turtle matures, it will drop a scute.

How Turtles behave in Minecraft

Minecraft Turtles Behaviour

As turtles are amphibians they can live both on land and water. But in Minecraft, they move slowly on land and can swim fast in the water. Like other passive mobs in Minecraft, they also flew away when attacked. When they remain on land, they mostly prefer to go to the nearest water source area where they should have direct sky access.

A turtle cannot be attached to leads but can be led by players holding the seagrass within 10 blocks. When they are kept in an enclosed area, they usually swim in a circle.

What is the Use of Turtles in Minecraft

Unlike other mobs, turtles also do not have many things. But the turtle shells are useful as it is a wearable item that helps a player to breathe a little bit longer underwater. It increases the time limit for breathing underwater by 10 seconds. By wearing a turtle shell in a helmet while out of the water, it will give the player a “water breathing” status effect, which only starts the counting down when players submerged underwater.

Turtle shells can also be used in a potion recipe. With turtle shell, you can prepare the “Potion of the Turtle Master” which has 3 tiers that provide the player’s slowness and resistance status effect

What do Turtles eat in Minecraft

Turtles in Minecraft only eat seagrass which you can get in the Ocean Biomes. The seagrass helps the turtles to enter into love mode and eventually helps in breeding. Make sure you protect the turtle from certain mobs as Wither and Zoglins can attack the turtles. Turtles can die instantly when struck by lightning.
